While working in the Power Tools Accessories Advanced Manufacturing team you will be an active member on the thin film coatings team. In this role you will be designing coatings, test outcomes against specifications, and provide technology support to the coating's lab. You will become knowledgeable about our coating chambers, support the procurement and advancement of all thin films within Operations. You will support coating repeatability, effectiveness, and future advancement in this area using statical tools and leveraging your first-hand knowledge of experimentation using DOE (Design of Experiments) type of methodologies. You will be working directly with all levels and functional areas of the business including both the New Product Engineering groups and manufacturing sites is a common element of this role.


In addition to supporting development needs you will be responsible for supporting the commissioning, stabilization and production of product on new to the world manufacturing lines in a pilot plant setting. Establish manufacturing standard time values and gather data for the analysis of manufacturing processes and costs on complex and involved projects and make recommendation from the analysis. Prepare recommendations and analyses for the development of new or improved manufacturing processes to execute sustainable breakthrough and cost out improvements.

You'll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:

  • Coating recipe design, testing, and optimization.
  • Surface quality inspection, deduction, and reporting.
  • Participation in high-vacuum coating chamber maintenance and optimization.
  • Coating system trouble shooting and corrective actions
  • Support with Statistical Process Control and other data-driven process analysis
  • Interaction with cross functional team members regarding capabilities and specifications
  • Support/lead timely and profitable production of product to meet scheduled demand
  • Strong project management skills to accomplish multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Evaluates technical requirements of new and existing products. Applies knowledge of qualified sources and products to recommend materials to Design Engineering, which would result in savings, lead time reductions, system improvements, increased life and/or mitigated risk.
  • Work with New Product Development teams to ensure the integrity and clarity of engineering drawing requirements and that all expectations are communicated effectively.
  • Continuous involvement in the Supplier Selection Process to develop a supply base that provides competitive advantage in quality, value/cost, delivery and technology.
  • Performing the supplier technical audit process and evaluating supplier performance and capability, drive continuous improvement opportunities at supplier.
  • Performing quality problem resolutions and incident management, drive root cause and correction action.
  • Support product development and improvement teams by sourcing new technologies from qualified suppliers.
  • Regarded as the technical expert in the following technical areas; Materials science and engineering of various coating processes, such as CVD, PVD, ALD or thermal spray, etc.
  • Demonstrates in-depth and/or breadth of expertise in own discipline and broad knowledge of other disciplines within the function of material analysis and characterization as well as surface analysis.
  • Failure analysis for the structural integrity of coated materials
  • Support/lead mid to high level manufacturing projects, providing direction, guidance and engineering expertise to team members. Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with engineering, manufacturing and other cross functional teams.
  • Provides management review and control of all operations work including product development, staff assignments, and the application of engineering principles.
  • Support/lead multiple, concurrent product development projects to ensure delivery of initiatives and products on schedule, on spec and on budget.
  • Establish priorities to ensure that timetables and cost projections are met.
  • Support of OPEX metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.

What TOOLS you'll bring with you:

  • 7 - 10 Years of experience is required.
  • PhD/MS/BS Degree in Surface Chemistry, Material Science, or Chemical Engineering. Advanced degree preferred or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with a range of nanofabrication process equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to self-direct a research project.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to both work independently and in a team environment
  • Hands-on experience with functional and decorative thin film deposition equipment (CVD, PVD, ALD, thermal spray, etc.) is preferred
  • Experienced in device integration (designing/running process flows) is preferred
  • Exhibit vision and foresight to test process extremes and build a robust risk assessment analysis matrix to ensure project success.
  • Able to effectively lead technicians and entry level technical team and provide technical guidance on complex initiatives to achieve project goals.
  • Provide technical advice to correlate manufacturing efforts to improve productivity.
  • Creative, agile and an innovative One Team approach to problem solving is critical to be successful in this position.
  • Identify short and long-range goals that will allow capitalization of the dominance of current product lines as well as the introduction of new products and technologies.

Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:

  • PhD/MS/BS Degree in Surface Chemistry, Material Science, or Chemical Engineering. Advanced degree preferred or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Deep mechanical aptitude is required including a broad knowledge of manufacturing processes and related.
  • Travel Ability to travel domestically and internationally for machine and/or concept evaluations. Estimated yearly travel, up to 25%. Most trips will be contained into 1 week with possibilities of weekend travel.
