Job Description


Working with regular direction and guidance from the Engineer Manager, primary duty is to utilize entry level to intermediate level engineering skills to contribute to the design and development of new products and support of existing products within the department.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Product Support
  • Regularly visit the manufacturing cells/suppliers that the Development Groups deal with to maintain open lines of communication with the cell/suppliers and provide troubleshooting analysis as required.
  • Evaluate and process requests for engineering changes from the cells.
  • Track warranty activity and initiate corrective action.
  • Identify and implement cost reductions.


  • Project Management
  • Lead simple to mid-level design projects under the supervision of senior engineering.
  • Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with Manufacturing and other cross-functional staff members; accurately follow all procedures covering new product development and design output in addition to procedures of non-engineering departments related to project flow.
  • Track project schedule to ensure adherence to timeliness; keep Chief Engineer informed on project and product support issues.
  • Occasionally make formal presentations regarding project status.
  • Participate as a key member of a team working on projects of a large scope.


  • Manufacturing
  • Develop and maintain familiarity and understanding of the various cell operations.
  • Make component material or process recommendations.
  • Under close guidance, explore the use of new materials.


  • Suppliers
  • Interact with suppliers to develop part/product specifications that meet performance requirements while falling within process capabilities.


  • Materials
  • Evaluate product design relative to the selection, cost and resolution of problems associated with materials, heat treatment and finishes and finished and make recommendations to Engineering.


  • Design Analysis
  • Perform a wide variety of calculations and software aided analysis in the following areas:
  • (Mechanical) Mechanical stress analysis, material and heat treatment selection based on application stresses, tolerance and fit analysis, lubricant properties, spur and helical gear design, statics and dynamics, noise and vibration and a variety of machine element design.
  • (Electrical) Magnetic analysis, PM and universal motor design, basic motor control design, noise and vibration analysis, battery technology and basic contact theory.
  • (Electronic) Use of Spice or similar circuit analysis software, circuit layout software, microcomputer based control schemes, phase and PWM motor controls, feedback systems, op amp design, transformer design and switching power supply technologies.
  • Testing (Mechanical, Electrical)
  • Independently write test requests to Test Laboratory based on established standard test procedures and prior examples.
  • Occasionally design new experiments and test systems.
  • Occasionally perform or assist with testing.
  • Occasionally use design of experiments (DOX) analytical techniques.
  • Exhibit vision and foresight to test the extremes of a design.
  • Draw concise logical, written conclusions from experiments based on data analysis.
  • In addition to the duties listed above, analyze complex digital and analog circuitry with oscilloscopes, signal analyzers and other related equipment as required. (Electronics)


  • Specific to Metallurgy/Material Science:
  • Coordinate the work efforts in the materials laboratory, assist in training technicians, assist Quality in developing and maintaining inspection procedures, prescribe equipment and provide technical support and consultation to the operation of the laboratory.
  • Assist Manufacturing Engineering in the heat treat area in establishing manufacturing instructions and recommend equipment and process changes which will improve and/or reduce the cost for material processing and finishing.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to all areas of Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales and Product Service relating to materials and finishes.


  • Specific to Value Engineering:
  • Basic understanding of Value Analysis and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) methodology.
  • Basic understanding of the various cost drivers associated with materials, labor & overhead.
  • Be able to manage several simultaneous, non-major cost reduction initiatives.
