Job Description

Design Engineer – AMD – Process Development Group
Duties and Responsibilities
o    Lead/participate in manufacturing process related feasibility studies.
o    Research to aid in the development of manufacturing processes & machine design solutions to meet our operations, manufacturing and new product development needs.
o    Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with manufacturing and other cross-functional team members.
o    Provide clear engineering information to Project Leaders and the Global Engineering team through PowerPoint and graphical tools. Data must be presented in a manner that facilitates effective decisions.

o    Interact with suppliers to develop part/product specifications that meet performance requirements while falling within process capabilities.
o    Work with Senior Engineers to gain the aptitude and experience working with Operations, Quality and Suppliers to establish appropriate specifications and delivering conforming products.
o    Evaluate product design relative to material selection, cost and reliability.
o    Establish test regimens for components and assemblies within his/her scope in the project with minimal guidance. Deliver complete data analysis to support design recommendations

o    Independently develop, write and analyze test requests with the MET Test Laboratory.
o    Work as a technical resource to troubleshoot problems with manufacturing teams and suppliers.
o    Serve as a technical resource on areas of expertise and provide consultation/mentorship to others.
o    Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with manufacturing and other cross functional staff members; must correctly follow all METCo procedures covering new product development and design output in addition to procedures of non-engineering departments related to project flow.
o    Schedule, develop agendas for, facilitate and document project meetings.
o    Track project schedule to ensure adherence to timelines; keep Chief Engineer informed on project issues.
o    Make formal presentations regarding project status.
o    Interact with manufacturing plants to maintain familiarity with cell operations and staff.
o    Make component material or process recommendations.
o    Occasionally, independently explore the use of new materials.
o    Poses a understanding in Quality related analysis tools; MiniTab, Gage R&R, Capability Studies

Job Requirements

Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or Mechanical Engineering Technology or related work experience.

Computer skills needed include Unigraphics (NX8.5) or similar 3D CAD package.

Experience with FEA preferred.

Continuously developing Mechanical aptitude is required including a broad knowledge of engineering materials, mechanical properties and an understanding of the manufacturing processes associated with these materials. 

Excellent problem solving skills and a hands-on attitude.

High interest in tools of the construction trades.

Ability to travel up to 30% of the time is preferred (travel includes Domestic and International)
Experience preferred to perform a wide variety of calculations and software aided analysis in the following areas: Mechanical stress analysis, material and heat treatment selection based on application stresses, very complex tolerance and fit analysis, FEA, FMEA, DFA/M, lubricant properties, spur and helical gear design, statics and dynamics, noise and vibration and a variety of machine element design. A creative and innovative approach to these mechanical application areas is necessary for the individual in this position to perform successfully
Highly developed level of Mechanical/Electrical engineering aptitude and expertise required, including a broad knowledge of engineering materials used in small appliances or power tools, and exposure to mechanical, electrical and chemical properties and an understanding of the manufacturing process associated with these materials.
Working knowledge of Value Analysis principles and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) methodology.
